We are strongly opposed to the UNAIDS Guidance Notes on HIV and Sex Work discussed at the upcoming PCB meeting in Geneva Monday 25 June.
The Guidance Notes make recommendations that are contrary to evidence-based and rights-based programs for HIV prevention and access to HIV treatment for sex workers. This document claims to be based on consultation with sex workers, yet it completely misrepresents or outright ignores all of the recommendations made by sex workers at the UNFPA Global Technical Consultation on HIV and Sex Work in Rio de Janeiro in July 2006.
We are distressed that our voice and that of our colleague sex worker groups have been manipulated in support of a plan that is extremely damaging to sex workers' health and human rights globally.
Signed,
Stella, Montreal's group by and for sex workers
