Mission: SWAT aims to become a network of sex workers and allies able to translate, edit and design reports, briefing papers, academic, blog and news articles, presentations, posters, or even photo captions to share sex work knowledge across cultural and language barriers. (Please read ‘Why + How’ for further details.)

Coordinators: Matthias Lehmann (Research Project Germany) & Katherine Koster (SWOP USA)

“I was motived to launch SWAT because I would like to contribute to seeing more sex work knowledge shared from those parts in the world where sex workers mostly communicate  in their native languages.” – Matthias

“I have friends who are fluent in other languages, and so do a lot of people. I was motivated to centralize all of these connections and make the work of sex worker rights organizations more accessible across languages and communities.” – Katherine

Why + How

The aim of SWAT is not only to provide sex workers and allies with a network to enable sex work knowledge sharing across as cultural and language barriers, but also to reward contributors for their work whenever possible. More often than not, as most of you will be painfully aware, there is no or only limited funding to pay those who translate, edit, or design the above listed materials.

SWAT wants to neither encourage nor discourage people from contributing their skills free of charge, but as actor Wil Wheaton recently aptly pointed out: “If you write something that an editor thinks is worth being published, you are worth being paid for it. Period. This advice applies to designers, photographers, programmers, ANYONE who makes something. You. Deserve. Compensation. For. Your. Work.” Thus, the idea of of SWAT is as follows.

[Step 1 – Advertise your task]

Organisations or individuals in need of a translator, editor, web designer or graphic artist can either post an ad in the SWAT Facebook group or send an email to the SWAT coordinators. While they are free to write in whatever language they wish, key details should also be provided in English (e.g. by using Google Translate). Organisations or individuals who have a paid opportunity available are asked to not advertise it via Facebook but contact the SWAT coordinators instead (see Step 3).

Sample 1

1. Name of organisation/individual: Sex Worker Outreach Project
2. Topic + purpose: Stigma experienced by trans* sex workers; policy brief
3. Source language: English
4. Target language: Spanish
5. Amount of words: 2,800
6. Estimated level of difficulty: Medium
7. Deadline: November 30

+ Accompanying text in your native language

Sample 2

1. Name of organisation/individual: Sex Worker Outreach Project
2. Type + Purpose: Umbrella Logo for new SWOP chapter in Tennessee
3. Deadline: November 30

+ Accompanying text in your native language

[Step 2 – Inform SWAT coordinators]

Once contact is established between the organisation/individual and the person(s) offering to help, they can discuss the task either publicly in the Facebook group or privately via email or chat. Once the job is done, they should then email to the SWAT coordinators to inform them of the completed task, ideally including information about the exact or estimated number of working hours or by describing what the task entailed. Should neither of them be able to write in English, they should please write in short, simple sentences to enable easy reading via Google Translate.

[Step 3 – Reward Scheme]

The SWAT coordinators will keep a record of all members and their respective skills. Every time someone contributes their work free of charge, their working hours will be converted into points to the best of the coordinators ability, based on the information provided. Organisations or individuals who have a paid opportunity available are asked to not advertise it via Facebook but to email to the SWAT coordinators, who will then contact a qualified member of the network who collected the most points, so that they are rewarded for the work previously done free of charge. Should that person be unavailable, the task would be offered to the person with the second-most points - and so on.

Once again, this network is not intended to discourage anyone from contributing their work free of charge. Many organisations and initiatives cannot work without the valuable contributions of volunteers and volunteering is a noble and meaningful thing to do. However, volunteering doesn’t pay anyone’s bills, and neither do exposure dollars or credit, which is why we hope that SWAT will help bring together sex workers and allies from around the world to share knowledge and, where possible, reward the many of you who work tirelessly to support sex workers’ rights.

We look forward to hearing from you. Please coordinator [dot] swat [at] gmail [dot] com (contact us via email) and let us know about the skills you would like to contribute. We also invite you to join the SWAT Facebook group.

Yours sincerely,

Can you #translate, edit or #design and would like to support #sexwork-ers’ #humanrights? Then join SWAT! https://www.facebook.com/groups/sexworkersandalliestranslate/
